Writing my own Forth

Written on

A few weeks ago one of the virtual Kansasfest talks (by Jan Rochat and available on YouTube) was about reconstructing the Chipwits source code. Beyond being a great talk it got me really curious about Forth. I found TaliForth 2 and did a quick port to the Apple II, but decided I wanted to write my own (in particular because TaliForth requires a 65c02 and I wanted 6502 compatability).

So fast-forward to a few weeks later and I have a somewhat-working Forth I'm calling Forthland. "Somewhat working" means neither compilation nor looping nor conditionals are working. But the basic concepts and interactive shell work and you can see the exciting lores results below!

This week I'm experimenting with using it in a game jam, but after that I plan to get back to it and start porting Melbor to Forthland. The great thing about Forths is that I can reuse a huge chunk of the assembly code I wrote for Melbor as is. The Forth will just tidy some stuff up and make porting and future development easier.
